MEDICINAL INGREDIENTS (PER UNIT DOSE)

Cascara Sagrada (Frangula purshiana) ..........380 mg (7.6 mg cascaroside A)

 

NON-MEDICINAL INGREDIENTS: Corn starch, gelatin 

  

INDICATION

Short-term relief of occasional constipation. This product has a contact laxative effect, facilitates bowel movement by direct action on the large intestine.

Consult a health care practitioner for use extending beyond 7 days

 

DOSAGE

Adults and adolescents 12 and over: 3 Capsules 1 time a day at bedtime. Swallow the capsules without opening or chew them. The time of onset of action is between 6 and 8 hours.

 

PRECAUTIONS

Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms persist or worsen. Cascara sagrada must not be used beyond one week. The use of laxatives for longer than recommended can cause intestinal sluggishness, spasms and cramps. Potassium loss resulting from prolonged use of Cascara Sagrada may potentialize digitalis toxicity and arrhythmias when Cascara Sagrada is administered concomitantly with anti-arrhythmic drugs. Some chemical constituents of cascara sagrada are excreted via kidney. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have kidney problems, or if you are taking heart medication such as cardiac glycosides or antiarrhythmic medications.

The concomitant use of other drugs that induce hypokalaemia, such as thiazide diuretics and adrenocorticosteroids may aggravate electrolyte imbalance. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are taking thiazide diuretics, corticosteroids, licorice root or other medications or health products which may aggravate the imbalance of electrolyte levels.

Indomethacin may have its effect decreased when administered with Cascara Sagrada.

It is recommended not to associate Cascara Sagrada with other drugs except under medical supervision.

Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you have faecal impaction or symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or fever.

Reduce dosage or discontinue use if you experience abdominal pain, cramps, spasms and / or diarrhea.

 

 

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Do not use Cascara Sagrada if you have abnormal constrictions of the gastrointestinal tract, a potential or existing intestinal blockage, atonic bowel, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, abdominal pain of unknown origin, undiagnosed rectal bleeding, severe dehydration with depleted water or electrolytes or diarrhea.

Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

 

 

ADVERSE REACTIONS

Hypersensitivity may occur. Abdominal spasms and irritation of the colon may  be observed following the use of Cascara Sagrada. If this occurs, discontinue use. In case of overdose, the main symptoms are abdominal cramps and severe diarrhea with consequent loss of fluids and electrolytes, which are to be repositioned. If this happens, call a poison control center or a doctor, even if you do not notice any signs or symptoms. Bring with you the product packaging.
